When I was young, my parents used to watch me sewing and say, “All the things you make are labors of love.” This has never been more true than with my quilts. Usually, when I’m making one, I do so with another person or place in mind. My quilts are a theological offering — a way of responding to the prompting of the Spirit using the skill of my hands.

It is sometimes said that every preacher has one sermon in their heart, and every other sermon they preach riffs on that central theme. I would claim two: 1) that God loves every one of us, just as we are. And 2) that our calling in this world is to co-create with God. We are Spirit driven beings on an earthly, incarnate journey. God walks beside us, every step. The ways we use our hands informs our hearts, our minds, and our souls: leading them deeper and deeper into love.

Spirit Driven Stitching was featured in the October 2022 edition of The Living Church. Read the article here.
